Why Choose Professional Whitening?

A healthy mouth and pearly white teeth have been a common goal for ages.  The use of toothpaste to clean and whiten dates back to the Egyptians around 5000 BC.  It’s safe to say we’ve come a long way from bark, ox hooves’, burnt eggshells, and pumice mixed in wine vinegar.  Thank goodness!

These days we’re inundated with dozens of products promising to whiten and brighten.  Over the counter toothpaste, whitening strips, gels, swabs, mouth trays, and LED systems have become the new norm.  What each of these products generally share is that they contain the same bleaching agent – peroxide.  These OTC products contain a weaker concentration of peroxide and are less effective than the high powered bleaching agent you get at your dentist’s office.  When used as directed, they’re safe but can still cause tooth sensitivity and gum irritation.  Contact your dentist immediately if you notice unwanted changes or sensations after using an OTC whitening product at home.

The primary reasons we recommend professional whitening by a dentist is that the results are faster, more dramatic, longer-lasting, and most effective in a healthy mouth.  In our office, we begin with a consultation, thorough examination, and cleaning to removing any plaque or tartar to set the stage for the best result.  As mentioned, the potency and effectiveness of a professionally administered bleaching agent are significantly higher.  The thin outer layer of your tooth called the enamel is what’s affected by the surface treatment, which is weakest at the gum line.  A thin layer of material will be applied to this area to make sure the whitening agent only comes into contact with your natural teeth.  Please note that the whitening process does not work on crowns, most fillings or intrinsic stains caused by certain medications or types of trauma.
