Cosmetic Contouring?

December 20, 2019

If little imperfections in your smile have you hiding it away, cosmetic contouring may be the answer for you.  Enameloplasty or tooth reshaping is a simple, fast, and painless dental procedure to correct slight issues in length, contour, and tooth surface to enhance your smile.  You could have a new look on your lunch break!

How Is It Done?

Depending on the correction needed, your dentist will apply abrasion techniques or instruments such as a drill or laser that will gently remove enamel to create your desired look. When both you and your dentist are thrilled with your newly contoured teeth, they will be polished, and you will be on your way.  The entire contouring procedure typically takes less than one hour, and there is no need for downtime after.

Is It Safe?

Yes, it is.  Given the fact that each patient and every smile is unique, we begin with an in-office consultation to discuss options, objectives and answer any questions you have.  X-rays may be taken to be sure the teeth are healthy.  Since there are no nerves in tooth enamel, there is no discomfort during treatment, and due to the fact enamel doesn’t grow back, there is no need for the procedure to be repeated in the future.  However, the remaining tooth enamel will be thinner afterward and will require a bit more diligence to avoid abrasives.  Worn enamel can lead to painful tooth sensitivity.

Is Contouring Right for You?

This treatment is ideal for anyone who wants a simple cosmetic tweak to enhance their smile.  However, if the issue is more severe, like crowding, crooked, or misshapen teeth, you may need more intensive treatment like braces or veneers.  If bonding  is required, contouring may be a great compliment to get the look you desire.
